Located about an hour southeast of Florence, near Arezzo, Il Borro is a medieval village built around a fortress dating back to the Middle Ages. After an eventful history with famous noble families (the Medicis came here to hunt) and having belonged to the Hohenlohe family, then to the House of Savoy and finally to the Duke of Aosta, it was in 1997 that the famous Ferruccio Ferragamo (king of Italian fashion) bought Il Borro and entrusted its management to his son Salvatore, who retired from the fashion empire to turn Il Borro into a luxurious, peaceful holiday resort and an excellent wine estate producing great IGT Toscana wines.
Il Borro is an impressive 700-hectare Tuscan estate where time seems to stand still. A veritable oasis of hospitality, including a medieval village, a 19th-century villa and a centuries-old wine cellar, Il Borro doesn't go unnoticed. Indeed, the estate is surrounded by splendid ochre and pink houses, places of life and legend for illustrious Florentine families such as the Pazzis and the Medici, a family that has shaped the destiny of Tuscany. Today, Il Borro belongs to the Ferragamo family (Italian fashion empire), who have brought this wonderful corner of Tuscany back to life with unbridled passion.
In 1985, during a hunting trip, Ferruccio Ferragamo discovered this reserve near the village of Il Borro, in the province of Florence. Nearly ten years later, seduced by its beauty, he decided to buy the entire property then belonging to Duke Amedeo D'Aosta, including the medieval hamlet and the manor house destroyed during the Second World War. The small hamlet, dating back to 1039, is the true heart of the estate, perched on the craggy rocks of the “Borro”, a term used to describe a ravine formed by a stream bed. Today, thanks to Salvatore Ferragamo's care and extensive restoration work, the estate has been restored to its original splendor, reviving the ancient traditions of the area.
A new lifestyle concept, tasteful sophistication and the memory of times gone by: this is the soul of Il Borro. Thanks to the watchful eye of the Ferragamo family, a splendid “luxury farmhouse” has been created, with a total of 28 dwellings comprising apartments, villas and farmhouses, respecting typical materials and their history, splendidly furnished with furniture and objects of local craftsmanship. The elegance of the style, the beauty of the landscape, the comfort and the pleasant Tuscan climate make Il Borro an exclusive destination, offering guests countless opportunities to relax: a stroll through the narrow village streets, a dip in the overhanging pool, an afternoon at the spa or a traditional meal at the Osteria del Borro. The space just above the wine cellar is used for exhibitions and cultural events. The owners' interest in art and Ferruccio Ferragamo's private collection, passionately assembled over the years, has resulted in an interesting collection of wine-themed artworks, including works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Mantegna, Piranesi, Manet, Picasso and Andy Warhol.
In 1993, Ferruccio Ferragamo began producing wine with the help of oenologist Nicolò D'Afflitto who, after a careful analysis of the terrain, planted and cultivated the grape varieties best suited to the characteristics of the site: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot at an altitude of 300 meters, Sangiovese at 350 meters and Chardonnay at 500 meters. The estate lies in the Valdarno at the foot of Mount Pratomagno, and enjoys well-structured soil shaped by ancient lakes that covered the valley during the Pliocene era. A total of 45 hectares produce wines of excellence that have attracted considerable attention from experts over the years.
