Monteverro, the first great cru from Maremma Tuscany

All about you know about Tenuta Monteverro, great tuscan wine estate located on Maremma aera at Capalbio village.

Located just below the small medieval town of Capalbio in the heart of the province of Grosseto, in the Tuscan Maremma, Monteverro is a 50-hectare estate acquired by German entrepreneur Georg Weber. Having long sought to invest in Australia, Napa Valley and Bordeaux, but without success, it was in Tuscany that the German entrepreneur found his happiness in 2003. Here, in this setting of greenery and maquis, the objective was set from the outset: to produce one of Tuscany's finest vintages. Monteverro produces dense, muscular wines, like the cast-iron boar that stands at the entrance to the estate. Monteverro, or Mount of the Boars, has a lot to say.

The passion for wines

A German entrepreneur produces French styled wines in Italy: an uncommon blend that begs for an explanation. Georg Weber studied Business Administration in Lausanne, Suisse, and had always shown an interest in fine wines. His favorite holiday destinations were Bordeaux and Napa Valley. But the ultimate defining experience that turned him into a true wine lover was the chance to enjoy a Premier Grand Cru Classé with a good friend. Since that time he has become a passionate wine collector, owning wines from all of the major wine regions in France, Italy, Spain and California.

The goal of a first Grand Cru

The idea to produce great premium wines occurred to him some time ago but he took the time to search for the perfect terroir. Looking in Australia, New Zealand, Bordeaux and Burgundy, he was never fully convinced of the land’s potential. Taking the advice of two winemakers he eventually discovered a 50 hectare plot in Monteverro, located in the south of Tuscany between Capalbio and the sea. The soil here had only ever been used for grain, olive trees, cornfields and scrub; because there was not a historical wine tradition in this region. The land therefore had great potential and was rich in nutrients. The micro-climate here is perfect, the Tuscan sun is strong and the proximity to the sea brings a cool breeze that cools the vines and the dries the grapes.

Terroir and specific microclimate

Georg Weber acquired the property in 2003 and three years later completed construction of the winery, after all the proper permits had been issued. He named the winery after the region: Monteverro. The iron-rich clay and stony soils were analyzed in-depth and divided into plots. The vineyards are situated on hills surrounding the winery, which perfectly fits into the landscape without letting the sophisticated and highly modern concept behind it dominate the natural beauty. It houses a cooling tunnel to cool down the grapes and has 44 fermentation tanks, where each plot is fermented separately. Based on international winemaking models Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay can be found here. The team of Monteverro includes Matthieu Tauray and Michael Voegele. And the winery hired the best external oenological consultants that could be found worldwide: Michel Rolland and the Jean Hoefliger.

Characterful wines

"Our Monteverro is produced in small quantities coming from the best parcels, which are situated on steep slopes facing directly the sea. The silky texture of the Monteverro, its distinctive complexity and the impressive variety of flavors routes in our love for every detail," says Georg Weber. (Schweizerische Weinzeitung, p. 5) The most important wine of Monteverro, and also its flagship, is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. This wine nurtured in the roots of the Tuscan soil, develops into to something great.
