Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the most historic entities in the Barolo region, producing outstanding wines that are exported and appreciated worldwide. For six centuries, the estate was owned by the noble Falletti family, before becoming the property of Giovanni Cordero di Montezemolo and his children, Elena and Alberto, in 1940. Today, the estate comprises 28 hectares in a single block on a unique and complex soil. For decades, this uniquely valuable terroir has helped produce some of the wines that have made Piedmont famous the world over.
The Cordero di Montezemolo estate wasn't always known by this name. In fact, its history began in 1340, when Pietrino Falleti became owner of the Morra commune and, consequently, of the Monfalletto vineyard. Over the following centuries, the family greatly expanded its holdings. It was then divided up according to inheritance. Only the La Morra estate has belonged to the same branch of the Falleti family for 16 generations. But with the death of Countess Luigia Falletti di Rodello in 1941, the line died out. The estate then reverted to the nearest heir, Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo, Countess Falletti di Rodello's grandson. Today, his son Giovanni is at the head of the vineyard, along with his children Elena and Alberto.
Today, the estate covers 28 hectares in a single block. Local grape varieties such as Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and Arneis are grown on this magnificent terroir. The vines benefit from a unique, complex subsoil. Year after year, this confidential production area works silently to produce some of the wines for which Piedmont is famous. After several years of restoration and expansion, the winery and estate are now a model of how to combine traditional structure and innovation.
The soil has always been cultivated using the most efficient cultivation techniques, while trying to be as non-invasive as possible. The aim is above all to preserve biodiversity in order to provide a healthy and ideal environment, which is essential for the final quality of the products. For the same reason, only fertilizers of organic origin are used. Chemical fertilizers and synthetic products are therefore prohibited. The soil is worked mechanically, with natural grass cover to promote the local ecosystem. A rainwater recovery and filtration system has also been installed. This is used for phytosanitary treatment, machine cleaning and plant management. In addition, a 250-meter-deep well provides a sustainable water supply, even in dry years.
The estate offers wine lovers the chance to discover 5 different wines, but three in particular stand out. First, the cuvée that has made the estate's reputation. Barolo Monfalletto is the estate's historic wine. Made from a subtle, precise blend of grapes from most of the Monfalletto vineyards (in the commune of La Morra). The age of the plots that go into this wine varies from 15 to 50 years, and the vines benefit from excellent South/East and South/West exposure, enabling ideal, harmonious ripening. The clayey, slightly chalky soil gives this wine elegance and complexity. The batches used to make this wine are aged in various types of wood, both French and Slavic, for between 18 and 24 months before final blending and bottling. After a year, the bottles are considered ready for sale.
The “Monfalletto” cuvée has an intense garnet-red color, and reveals perfectly blended floral and spicy notes on the nose. There are also notes of tobacco, cherry, cocoa and fresh raspberry. The palate is rich, full-bodied and elegant. Bricco Gattera" has an aromatic bouquet with fragrances of jammy, ripe fruit. The palate is supple, with a remarkable structure, fine tannins and long finish. Finally, the “Enrico VI” cuvée is a great Barolo, both austere and complex. Deep red in color, it has a spicy bouquet with notes of eucalyptus, licorice and mint. There are also aromas of ripe fruit and violets. Powerful and slightly acidic, the palate is seductively fresh.
