Two major legal cases have shed light on abuses within the French wine industry.
In September 2025, the owner of Didier Chopin was sentenced to four years in prison for producing up to 1.8 million bottles of counterfeit Champagne, using legitimately obtained medal stickers and affixing them to fraudulent bottles.
Meanwhile, Ginestet, a Bordeaux wine merchant, was fined 100,000 euros for shipping 250,000 bottles to Japan bearing claims of 66 medals won by wines that had in fact received no awards.
