A wine warehouse is a specialist provider in the professional storage of wines and spirits under optimal conservation conditions. It accommodates the stocks of producers, négociants, importers, investors and collectors who wish to outsource the storage of their bottles in a controlled, secure environment compliant with current customs and fiscal regulations.
Wine storage is a profession in its own right. A great wine requires precise conditions to age harmoniously: constant temperature between 12 and 14°C, stable humidity around 75 to 80%, absence of vibrations, total darkness and protection against parasitic odours. A poorly adapted warehouse can irremediably compromise years of work in the cellar.
The first professional wine storage cellars appeared in London in the 18th century, driven by the passion of British aristocrats and merchants for the great wines of Bordeaux and Porto. London rapidly became the world's leading place for fine wine storage and trading, a status it retains today with warehouses such as those of London City Bond.
In France, the great underground cellars of Bordeaux, Reims and Épernay long constituted the only professional storage facilities. The development of approved fiscal warehouses in the 1980s and 1990s opened the market to independent operators, allowing négociants and importers to store their wines under excise duty suspension.
The wine warehouse manages stock entries and exits, lot and vintage tracking, regular inventories and associated services: sorting, reconditioning, recorking, wooden case relining and shipment preparation. It issues the mandatory customs and fiscal documents for each goods movement and manages relations with customs services.
For collection and prestige wines, the warehouse offers additional services: individual bottle photography, assessment of level and label condition, detailed condition reports for secondary market transactions and auction sales. Security is maximum: 24-hour video surveillance, biometric access, all-risks insurance specific to grand cru wines.

London remains the world's leading fine wine storage location with over 300 million bottles in professional storage
The global fine wine storage market is estimated at over 5 billion euros
Storage demand in Asia, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore, grew by over 40% between 2015 and 2023
Approved fiscal warehouse: storage under excise duty suspension, customs approval required
Professional wine cellar: optimal temperature and humidity conditions for fine wines
Bonded warehouse: storage of imported wines before customs clearance, deferred import taxes
Managed private cellar: dedicated space for a single client, personalised stock management
Collection warehouse: specialised in grand crus and prestige wines, maximum security and traceability
Regional logistics warehouse: mass storage, order preparation, national distribution
Wine free zone: Hong Kong, Singapore, free zones dedicated to international trading
Refrigerated warehouse: constant temperature maintenance for fragile wines and sensitive spirits
Bulk warehouse: tank, flexitank and cistern storage for négociant bulk wines
Wine freeport: Geneva, Luxembourg, freeports dedicated to high-value wines
The rise of wine as an investment asset is generating growing demand for highly secure storage warehouses, with impeccable traceability and recognised by major auction houses. The freeports of Geneva, Luxembourg and Singapore have emerged as strategic locations for storing and trading high-value wines outside national taxation.
The digitalisation of stock management is transforming the sector. Leading warehouses are investing in connected management systems allowing clients to consult their stock in real time, place delivery orders online and track the value of their wine portfolio via dedicated dashboards.
Finally, Asian demand continues to shape the global market. Since the abolition of wine import duties in Hong Kong in 2008, the city has become in just a few years one of the world's leading locations for grand cru storage and trading, attracting investors and specialist warehouses from around the world.
