A muselet manufacturer is an industrial specialist in the production of the twisted metal wire cage that holds the cork in bottles of Champagne, Cremant, Prosecco, Cava and other sparkling wines made by the traditional method or tank method. The muselet performs an essential safety function: it holds the cork in place under carbon dioxide pressure (approximately 5 to 6 bars in a Champagne bottle), preventing any untimely departure of the cork. Without it, sparkling wine bottles would be dangerous to handle and impossible to market.
The muselet consists of a round plate (the muselet plate) applied to the top of the cork, and a cage of twisted galvanised steel wire that grips the bottle neck under the ring. Standardised at 6 wire turns, it can be opened in exactly 6 half-turns of the wrist — a universal gesture recognised by every Champagne enthusiast in the world.
The muselet was invented by Adolphe Jacquesson, owner of Maison Jacquesson in Chalons-sur-Marne, in 1844. Before this invention, Champagne bottles were sealed with a cork held by a simple string or hemp ligature, which was unreliable and dangerous. The twisted wire muselet revolutionised the safety and practicality of Champagne packaging.
The muselet plate, a circular surface 3.1cm in diameter, quickly became a graphic and advertising space. From the end of the 19th century, Champagne houses personalised their plates with their logos, coats of arms and colours. Placomusophiles — muselet plate collectors — today form a worldwide community of several tens of thousands of enthusiasts.
In the 20th century, muselet production was mechanised and concentrated around a few specialist large manufacturers. Champagne, a major consumer of muselets (over 300 million per year), attracted several industrial specialists to the region. Manufacturing techniques evolved: improved galvanisation, fitting automats, increasingly sophisticated graphic personalisation of plates.
The muselet manufacturer manages industrial production from galvanised steel wire on coils. The wire is straightened, cut to length, mechanically twisted to form the cage, assembled with the circular plate by crimping or welding, then packaged in thousands in cartons or on coils for automated disgorgement lines.
The personalisation of muselet plates is an important commercial and creative activity. Each Champagne house has its own decorated plates: colours, logos, vintages, special cuvees, limited editions, artistic collaborations. Screen printing, embossing in relief and hot gilding enable very sophisticated finishes on this small 3.1cm surface.
Mechanical fitting on disgorgement lines is an important industrial constraint. The muselet must fit perfectly to the bottle neck geometry, be applied at high speed by caging automats, and resist 6 bars of pressure without deformation or rupture. Mechanical resistance tests are carried out continuously to guarantee safety.

The muselet faces competition from the screw cap for sparkling wines. Several Cremant, Prosecco and even some Champagne producers are experimenting with screw caps as an alternative to the muselet, particularly for tasting formats or accessible ranges. The screw cap offers reclosability that the muselet cannot provide.
The collector muselet plate is a growing marketing challenge. Major Champagne houses are increasingly investing in artistic plates, collaborations with contemporary designers and artists, and limited collectable series. This cultural and collector dimension of the muselet plate strengthens brand attachment among enthusiasts well beyond wine consumption.
Finally, traceability and authenticity are growing challenges in the fight against counterfeiting. Muselets equipped with NFC chips allow the authenticity of a Champagne bottle to be verified in real time and its complete history to be accessed from vineyard to final consumer. These technological innovations transform this humble metal accessory into a premium digital experience vehicle.
