A wine label printer is a specialist in the production of labels for wine and spirits bottles. They transform the graphic creations of estates, négociants and design agencies into physical supports affixed to the bottle, which often represent the consumer's first visual contact with the product.
The label is far more than a simple legal information medium. It is the ambassador of an estate's identity, a reflection of its positioning and a decisive sales argument on shelves, in wine shops and for export. In a highly competitive global market, a successful label can make all the difference.
The first wine labels appeared in Europe in the 18th century, initially handwritten or engraved on small wax-sealed paper slips. The industrialisation of printing in the 19th century enabled the democratisation of lithographed labels, with the first great Bordeaux and Champagne houses developing recognisable visual codes.
In the 20th century, offset and screen printing revolutionised quality and production volumes. Since the 2000s, digital printing has transformed the sector by enabling very short print runs, advanced personalisation and reduced production lead times. Today, connected labels with QR codes and NFC chips are opening a new era for the relationship between producers and end consumers.
The label printer works upstream with the estate or design agency to prepare technical files, validate colours (Pantone matching, CMYK) and select substrates. They choose the paper or material suited to the wine's positioning: traditional laid paper, metallic paper, textured paper, plastic film or self-adhesive sleeves.
Finishes are at the heart of the added value: selective varnish, hot foil stamping, embossing, debossing, special die-cutting. They manage technical constraints related to adhesion on wet glass (important for bottles taken from cold cellars), labelling regulations specific to each export country and mandatory organic certifications.
Over 20 billion wine labels produced each year worldwide
The global wine label market is estimated at over 3 billion euros
France is the third largest wine label market globally after Italy and Spain
Over 60% of new label printing installations are now digital
Offset printing: premium quality, ideal for large print runs, exceptional colour rendering
Digital printing: short runs, personalisation, fast turnaround, variable vintage
Flexography: high speed, economical for medium and large volumes
Screen printing: opaque and textured rendering, ideal for high-end labels
Hot foil stamping: gold, silver or colour stamping, luxury finish
Embossing / debossing: raised or recessed relief, premium tactile effect
Selective varnish: localised gloss on specific graphic elements
Sleeve label: heat-shrink wrap covering the entire bottle
NFC / QR code label: connected label enabling access to enriched digital content
Eco-responsible label: recycled paper, vegetable inks, solvent-free adhesives
Mass personalisation is the sector's major trend. Thanks to digital printing, an estate can now produce different labels for each export market, each vintage, each special cuvée or even each corporate client, without prohibitive additional costs.
Labelling regulations are becoming more complex across all markets. The European Union has required the display of ingredients and nutritional values on wine labels since 2023, obliging printers to integrate these new constraints while preserving the aesthetics of the designs. In the United States, China, Australia and Canada, requirements vary by state and province.
Finally, sustainability is establishing itself as a key selection criterion. Recycled papers, vegetable inks and solvent-free adhesives are advancing rapidly in the specifications of estates conscious of their carbon footprint and eco-responsible image.
