Bugey

Bugey, a confidential vineyard producing wines of character between Jura and Savoie

Nestled between the Ain department and the foothills of the Jura, Bugey is one of France's smallest and most charming appellations, with around 600 hectares of vines. Located east of Lyon, this discreet vineyard produces wines of remarkable diversity: crisp whites based on Chardonnay and Altesse, light reds based on Mondeuse and Gamay, and sparkling wines highly prized by discerning wine lovers. The Cerdon designation, with its fresh rosé Pétillant Naturel produced by the ancestral method, has become the most celebrated ambassador of this vineyard.

HISTORY OF BUGEY WINES

Vines have been cultivated in Bugey since Antiquity, as evidenced by the writings of Pliny the Elder. In the Middle Ages, the monks of Ambronay Abbey actively contributed to the development of the Bugey vineyard. The jurist and gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, born in Belley, helped spread the reputation of Bugey wines in the 19th century through his writings on gastronomy. After a difficult period caused by phylloxera and two world wars, the vineyard underwent a gradual renaissance from the 1950s onwards. Recognition as a VDQS in 1958, then as an AOC in 2009, marked the culmination of a long process of quality improvement by local winemakers.

THE HIERARCHY OF APPELLATIONS AND THEIR CLASSIFICATION

Bugey wines are organised according to a precise hierarchy. As throughout the French wine regions, the French appellation system structures production according to terroir and quality criteria.

AOC Bugey

The general appellation covers still whites, reds and rosés produced across the entire vineyard. Whites based on Chardonnay and Altesse are particularly renowned for their freshness and limestone minerality. The appellation may be supplemented by the geographical mentions Montagnieu, Manicle and Virieu-le-Grand.

AOC Bugey Cerdon

The true star of Bugey, this naturally sweet rosé Pétillant Naturel produced by the ancestral method from Gamay and Poulsard is a lightly sweet wine of great aromatic freshness. Its fine bubbles, vivid pink colour and aromas of wild strawberries and redcurrants have made it one of the most popular wines in France.

AOC Bugey Sparkling and Semi-Sparkling

Bugey also produces sparkling wines made by traditional methods, including the Montagnieu Mousseux, crisp and elegant whites produced on limestone terraces overlooking the Rhône.

BUGEY AND ITS EMBLEMATIC GRAPE VARIETIES

The notion of terroir is central to Bugey. The grape varieties cultivated here fully express the geological and climatic characteristics of this transitional region between the Alpine world and the Rhône valley plains.

Altesse

Chardonnay

Mondeuse

Altesse

Chardonnay

Mondeuse

Altesse (Roussette)

A noble white grape variety shared by Bugey and neighbouring Savoie, Altesse produces wines of great aromatic complexity, with notes of honey, white flowers and apricot. Its lively acidity and fine length on the palate characterise its finest expressions.

Chardonnay

Ubiquitous in Bugey, Chardonnay expresses a fine freshness and characteristic limestone minerality here. Whether vinified in stainless steel or oak barrels, it produces straight and precise wines sometimes approaching the Burgundian style.

Mondeuse

The emblematic red grape of both Bugey and neighbouring Savoie, Mondeuse produces deep-coloured wines with aromas of dark fruits, spices and violet. It can be tannic in its youth but ages remarkably well, revealing earthy notes and woodland nuances.

ESTATES AND CELLARS OF BUGEY
