A pallet manufacturer is an industrial supplier specialising in the production of handling and transport supports for the wine and spirits industry. The pallet is the invisible yet indispensable link in the entire logistics chain: it enables the storage, movement and shipment of cartons, wooden cases and containers in large quantities, from the production cellar to the warehouses of importers and distributors worldwide.
In the wine sector, pallets must meet specific requirements: resistance to weight (a pallet of 12 six-bottle cartons can exceed 200 kg), compatibility with the humid environments of cellars and wineries, and compliance with international phytosanitary regulations for export.
The modern wooden pallet was born in the United States in the 1920s, with the development of the fork-lift truck. It gradually replaced barrels, sacks and individual crates as the standard unit load across all industrial sectors. In the wine sector, its mass adoption dates from the 1960s and 1970s, with the mechanisation of wineries and the rise of mass retail.
The EUR/EPAL pallet (120 x 80 cm), standardised in Europe in the 1960s, became the global reference format for wine and spirits transport in containers and trucks. Today, billions of pallets circulate worldwide each year, with a growing share of plastic and recycled pallets.
The pallet manufacturer selects wood species (pine, spruce, poplar), dimensions formats according to client needs and carries out the mandatory phytosanitary treatment for export. They also manage the repair and reconditioning of used pallets, a fast-growing market driven by the circular economy.
In the premium sector, some manufacturers offer bespoke pallets: half-size pallets for small cuvées, reinforced pallets for large bottles, washable plastic pallets for refrigerated environments. The EPAL certification is an internationally recognised quality benchmark required by many logistics operators.
Over 6 billion pallets in circulation worldwide, approximately 500 million in Europe
France is the second largest European producer of wooden pallets, with over 100 million units produced per year
Over 80% of pallets used in the wine and spirits sector are made of wood
The global pallet market is estimated at over 60 billion euros, growing steadily driven by e-commerce
EUR/EPAL pallet: European standard format 120 x 80 cm, EPAL certified
American pallet: 120 x 100 cm format, North American standard
Half pallet: 60 x 80 cm format, ideal for small cuvées and point-of-sale displays
Plastic pallet: washable, hygienic, used in refrigerated environments
Metal pallet: very high resistance, used for large formats and barrels
Expendable pallet: single use, often used for long-distance export
Pooled pallet: return and reuse system, EPAL or pool model
ISPM15 certified pallet: mandatory phytosanitary treatment for export outside EU
Recycled / reconditioned pallet: circular economy, repaired and returned to service
FSC certified pallet: wood from sustainably managed forests
The circular economy is profoundly transforming the pallet sector. The collection, repair and reconditioning of used pallets now represents a market in its own right, driven by the CSR requirements of major wine groups and rising wood raw material costs.
The digitalisation of traceability is accelerating with the integration of RFID chips and QR codes on pallets, enabling real-time tracking of logistics flows from the winery to the final distributor. This technology is particularly valued by négociants and importers managing thousands of references simultaneously.
Finally, new phytosanitary regulations impose increasingly strict controls on export packaging wood, particularly towards the United States, Australia and China. Manufacturers must invest in approved heat treatment equipment and regularly update their certifications.
