A wine packaging and design studio is a creative agency specialising in the design of visual identities for wines and spirits. It works across all brand supports: creation or redesign of labels, design of wooden cases and gift boxes, capsule design, screen-printed bottles and all communication supports associated with the universe of the estate or house.
In a global market where thousands of references compete for consumer attention within seconds, design has become a major strategic lever. A studio specialising in wine masters both the aesthetic codes of the sector, the technical constraints of printing and the regulatory requirements specific to each export market.
The first artistically driven wine labels appeared in Bordeaux in the 19th century. Château Mouton Rothschild inaugurated in 1945 the tradition of artist labels, commissioning each year a major name in contemporary art for an original creation. This initiative profoundly influenced the perception of the label as a work of art in its own right and paved the way for unlimited creativity in the sector.
The 1990s and 2000s saw the emergence of the first studios specialising in wine packaging, driven by the globalisation of the market and the multiplication of references on shelves. Today, with the rise of digital, studios also integrate web design, mobile applications and augmented reality experiences linked to bottles.
The packaging and design studio begins with an in-depth discovery phase: estate history, values, price positioning, target markets, competition. It then develops a brand strategy before moving to visual creation: typography, colour palette, illustrations, photography, textures.
The technical phase is critical: file preparation for printing (colour profiles, bleed, Pantone management), coordination with printers for rendering tests, validation of mock-ups on real bottles. The best studios also offer support on overall communication strategy and brand identity consistency across all supports.
Over 350,000 wine labels registered each year worldwide, each requiring a creation or graphic update
A successful label redesign can increase wine sales by 20 to 40% according to specialist market studies
The average budget for a complete visual identity creation for an estate ranges from 3,000 to 50,000 euros depending on the size and ambition of the project
Asian markets, particularly China and Japan, have very specific aesthetic codes that often require local adaptation of designs
Label creation: complete graphic design, typography, illustration, regulatory layout
Range redesign: modernisation of visual identity while preserving the estate's historic codes
Gift box design: conception of wooden cases, cardboard boxes and premium gift sets
Complete brand identity: graphic charter, logo, typography, colour palette, guidelines
Capsule and closure design: design of foil capsules, screw caps and heat-shrink sleeves
Artist label: collaboration with an artist for a prestige cuvée or limited edition
Export market adaptation: design variations according to regulatory and cultural requirements of each country
Digital design: website, social media, mobile applications, augmented reality experiences
Naming and positioning: creation of the cuvée, estate or range name
Screen-printed bottle design: direct printing on glass, no label, for ultra-premium cuvées
Shelf differentiation is the permanent challenge of wine design. With thousands of references competing in supermarkets, wine shops and e-commerce platforms, a distinctive and memorable design has become an absolute necessity, particularly for New World wines that cannot rely solely on the notoriety of an appellation.
Adaptation to Asian markets represents a growing challenge. Aesthetic codes in China, Japan or South Korea differ profoundly from Western canons. Colours, typography and illustrations must be rethought to resonate culturally with these consumers, without betraying the original identity of the estate.
Finally, design sustainability is establishing itself. Studios are increasingly working to design eco-responsible labels, reusable packaging and designs adapted to the new European regulatory constraints, while maintaining the aesthetic level expected by international premium buyers.
